Simultaneous Corn Harvest Hits Waropen as Indonesia Pushes Self-Sufficiency

InfoMatoa, Waropen | Waropen Regency took part in the National Simultaneous Corn Harvest for the Fourth Quarter of 2026, joining farmers and security forces across Indonesia in a coordinated effort to strengthen national food security on Thursday (January 8, 2026). The activity was held at the Trans SP 6–Waren road area in Syawara Jaya Village, Waropen Bawah District, and connected virtually to the national event led by Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman. The program formed part of a nationwide harvest involving 36 regional police jurisdictions and hundreds of farmer groups.

Local participation was attended by officials from the Waropen Police, the Regional Agriculture Office, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and representatives of Bhayangkari, alongside more than 20 police personnel. The event ran from 12:30 WIT to 14:00 WIT. local time. In the national report delivered by the Assistant to the Chief of Police, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government’s food self-sufficiency program through the Food Security Task Force. The initiative integrates collaboration between central and regional governments, farmer groups, state-owned enterprises, private sector partners, and community organizations.

Nationally, total corn harvest area for the fourth quarter of 2026 is projected to reach 47,830 hectares, with estimated production of approximately 743,520 tons. On the day of the simultaneous harvest alone, around 1,191 hectares were harvested, producing an estimated 4,765–11,912 tons of corn. The program involves more than 527 farmer groups and 3,616 farmers nationwide. Data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) shows that national corn production increased by around 9 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, while Polri contributed approximately 3 million tons to national output. Indonesia currently maintains a surplus corn stock estimated at 4.5 million tons, sufficient to meet domestic needs for several months. In addition to boosting production, Polri continues to support corn absorption by Perum Bulog as part of the national food reserve strategy. By the end of 2025, Bulog had absorbed more than 101,000 tons of corn, or nearly 69 percent of available warehouse capacity. All corn harvested during the simultaneous program is allocated for national food reserves.

The event also featured an interactive national dialogue led by Commission IV Chair Titiek Soeharto, followed by the simultaneous harvest across all participating regions. Local authorities stated that Waropen’s participation reflects the region’s commitment to supporting the national food security agenda and strengthening agricultural productivity at the local level. The activity concluded in a safe and orderly manner.
